Privacy and New Media

When it comes to new media you have to think about privacy and confidentiality. With the explosion and popularity of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites where one’s personal life may be an open book there have been many questions as to what is private and what is not. People have lost their jobs over their Facebook profiles and things they have posted online. A big question when it comes to Facebook, Google and other popular websites that have tons of information about millions of people is what are they doing with all the information they have about us? Some people are very concerned about this and what could happen while others are not that worried. People respond by making their Facebook pages private and being aware of the content they post.

New media has sparked this discussion about what is private and what is public information. When someone blogs about their life and their feelings online is this just as private if they wrote in their diary and locked it with a key or is it up to the hosting website if the content you post should be shared publically? These issues have been fought in court including in criminal cases and class action lawsuits.
